Donorship: It’s financed by official development assistance of the Slovak Republic, SlovakAid
Implementation period: 2023 – 2024
Summary:
The project is a response to the serious lack of drinking water in the village of Grepan which is part of the Faida sub-district, where displaced people fleeing the horrors of the Islamic State live. Despite the defeat of the Islamic State in 2017, Iraq is still in a phase of gradual reconstruction, complicated by political, security and economic instability. The pandemic and the decision by local authorities to gradually close IDP camps, the inability of people to find a place to return to and the ability to seek refuge in communities that have hosted displaced communities in the past are further complicating the situation, further straining its infrastructure and making the country fifth most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change leading to food insecurity. The main objective of the project is to improve the living conditions of the local and internally displaced communities, with the aim of the project being to install water treatment plants for households and filter cooling units for a primary school so that residents and students have equally stable access to drinking water. Thanks to the project organizers, we will prevent possible tension between them, create conditions for development, improve the conditions of women and children (5 SDG), and reduce the amount of plastic waste from purchased bottled water and emissions associated with its distribution (13 SDG). Improving favorable conditions is enhanced by providing information through education on water conservation, arable farming and livestock activities. Training for students and teachers will focus on drinking habits and hygiene to prevent the spread of infectious diseases, education will be inclusive and encourage women’s participation, which is not common in such patriarchal societies. The project has a positive impact on gender equality and the environment in specific.
